The Put-in-Bay Township Volunteer Fire Department is made up of 22 members that include Chief Michael McCann, Assistant Doug Wilhelm, Captain Chris Ladd, Captain J.R. Domer, and 18 Volunteers. There were over 25 calls for help from the fire department in 2017.
With the aid of the community, the Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department is well equipped to handle a variety of situations that arise. The department purchased 2 new fire trucks in 2006, a pumper truck and a tanker truck. These trucks are equipped with new SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) packs and new hoses and nozzles.
In recent years, the department has acquired a 16 foot rescue boat, a thermal imaging camera (for finding heat signatures of fires or victims), a modern ice rescue sled, and replaced outdated turnout gear for it’s members. In 2014, the fire department acquired a 21' airboat named Freedom, after former member Ron Root, for winter rescue calls.
Each fall, the members of the fire department host a clam bake in September to raise funds for updating equipment. Thelam bake is Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 12pm to 5pm. The generous support of the community has made this event a success each year. Tickets are available the day of the clam bake at the fire station and sell-outs are not uncommon (so come early!).
